Years ago, a friend gave me a book The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn. I put the book on my bookshelf and forgot about it for years. Until one day, she asked me if I had ever read the book that she gave me. I confessed that I had not. But I knew exactly where I had placed it on my bookshelf. I pulled down the book that to my surprise was originally written in 1925. How could something written so long ago, hit me right where I needed in my life? For me, I find that I gravitate to the classics.
Once I opened this book, I couldn’t stop talking about it. I would even purchase so many, that I began to give away these books when inspired. I found that this book is not only used in the curriculum for the Unity Churches, it is also listed in almost every single category in book stores: Self-Help; Spiritual, Religious, just to name a few.
I love the practical applications that Shinn gave in assisting one in winning the ‘Game of Life’. “Most people consider life a battle, but it is not a battle, it is a game . . . the great game of Giving and Receiving”, Shinn says.
Many of us love sports. We enjoy seeing how teams adjust in tight spots and just how well the players are playing that day. Players study film on their opponents throughout the week, while honing in on their craft and skills to be their best for the game.
Life is a game, whether we choose to look at it that way or not. During your journey are you learning what the rules are for certain areas of your life? Do you adjust, as you learn better, or do you continue to ‘stub your toe’? Are you suited up, armored up and ready to go or are you in the bleachers afraid to get into the game? Life is a game . . .how you playin’ it?
